Day 993: Dangers of Normal Entropy

Why being normal should be avoided at all costs

Everything in nature wants to even out. Like water finding its level, businesses and people naturally drift toward what's typical and safe.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately.

Jeff Bezos pointed out something interesting in his final Amazon shareholder letter - the same force that makes a hot cup of coffee cool down to room temperature is constantly working on us too. In business, in life, in everything.

Per Jeff Bezos

Here's what this means for innovation: Being different isn't just about standing out - it's about staying alive. Every unique thing we build, every new approach we take, is fighting against a natural pull toward average.

The market doesn't want new ideas. It wants predictable ones.

I see this in my own work daily.

There's always a "normal" way to do things. A proven path. And yes, taking that path would be easier. It would take less energy. But that's exactly why innovation matters more than ever.

The hard truth is this: maintaining any kind of edge takes constant work. It's not a one-time decision to "be innovative." It's showing up every day and choosing to push against the current, even when it's exhausting.

You can already see who's giving in to this pressure. Who's letting their temperature match the room.

Don't let that be you.

With great hope,
